Mandate

Objectives, priorities and areas of authority

The Mission's mandate is set by the Security Council and reviewed at regular intervals. It defines what the Mission may and may not do, and how it works alongside the host state.

Authority

Acting under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations, the Security Council authorises the Mission to take necessary measures within its area of operations to protect civilians under imminent threat of physical violence.

Protection of Civilians

Prevent, deter and respond to threats against civilians through physical protection, dialogue and support to national authorities.

Political process

Support inclusive dialogue, elections and constitutional reform in cooperation with regional organisations.

Rule of law

Reinforce independent judicial and correctional systems in line with international standards.

Human rights

Monitor, report and support redress for violations; advance the protection of at-risk groups.

Gender

Implement the Women, Peace and Security agenda across all pillars of the Mission.

Child protection

Prevent grave violations against children and support reintegration of those affected by conflict.

Humanitarian access

Enable safe, timely and unimpeded access for humanitarian actors under international humanitarian law.
